How the CAO Brings Clarity to Condominiums in Ontario

The Condominium Authority of Ontario (CAO) is an organization that was established in 2017 to provide services and resources to condominium owners, residents, and board members across Ontario. The CAO's mandate includes providing education, providing training, resolving disputes, and administering the Condominium Act.

The CAO was created as part of a broader effort to modernize Ontario's condominium laws and regulations. Prior to its establishment, there was no central agency responsible for overseeing the growing number of condominiums. This led to confusion and inconsistency in how condominiums were managed and regulated.

Today, the CAO plays a critical role in ensuring that Ontario's condominiums are well-managed, financially stable, and safe for residents. Some of the key services provided by the CAO include:

  • Education and Training: The CAO offers a range of education and training programs for condominium owners, residents, and boards. These programs cover topics such as governance, finance, maintenance, and legal issues.

  • Dispute Resolution: One of the key functions of the CAO is to help resolve disputes between condominium owners, residents, and boards. The CAO offers several dispute resolution services, including mediation, arbitration, and adjudication.

  • Administration of the Condominium Act: The CAO is responsible for administering certain provisions of the Condominium Act. This includes maintaining a public registry of all condominium corporations in Ontario.

The CAO is an important resource for anyone involved in owning or managing a condominium in Ontario. By providing education and training programs, resolving disputes fairly and efficiently, and administering key aspects of the Condominium Act, the CAO helps ensure that Ontario's condominiums are well-run and sustainable over the long term.
